Permethrin - Interesting Facts About this Chemical
Permethrin has a history that dates back to the 18 th century, as a synthetic offspring of pyrethrum. Pyrethrum is an organic pesticide derived from the dried and crushed flowers of the daisy Chrysanthemum. Scientist have long known of the properties of pyrethrum as a toxin for controlling pests, and the organic form was used until the man-made compound was created in the 1970’s.
Permethrin is known as a broad spectrum insecticide, meaning that its application helps to eliminate a wide variety of insects. Among the list of pests it has been shown to destroy are head lice, mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and flies.
Pediculicides are chemical formulas derived from permethrin for the treatment of the head louse, nits and eggs. Because it is a toxin, pediculicides must be formulated to effectively kill head louse while minimizing the risk to the user. Nix is the only brand that contains permethrin, and is recommended as the most effective of the over-the-counter lice treatment solutions. Nix permethrin lice products are sold at most major pharmacies in the U.S.
The chemical works by direct contact, which is why it is delivered in an application such as crème rinse. Once it comes in contact with a head louse or its egg, it’s toxins damage the nervous system of the head louse, either killing it or rendering it paralyzed. Either result eliminates the head louse’s ability to reproduce, thus ending the head louse cycle that promotes complete infestation.
Even though permethrin has a low toxicity effect on humans, and amounts absorbed by the body are quickly broken down and excreted by the body, women who are pregnant should consult their physician before coming in contact with louse treatment formulas that contain the synthetic compound permethrin.
After applying a head louse treatment containing permethrin to someone suffering from head lice, it is important to wash your hands thoroughly to remove any remaining traces of this chemical. You should also avoid accidental contact with the mouth or eyes before thoroughly washing your hands as it could result in irritation.
