You Can Control Louse Infestations with a Plan of Attack

Louse control begins with early diagnosis to see if you or someone in your family has been infested with head lice. Of the estimated 25 million annual cases of head lice, the majority of those who are inflicted with the annoying louse are age twelve and under. Although head lice can be contracted at anytime of the year, anyone with children knows that head lice incidents are highest within the first few months of school, and this is when preventive measures geared toward controlling louse infestations should be most vigilant.

Your plan to control louse infestations should include more than waiting for a letter from the school nurse that someone in your child’s class has head lice and that you should check your child. The effective control of head louse should be a proactive procedure, to help keep possible infestations of lice under control. You do not want them spreading to other family members or classmates. Proactive louse control includes inspecting your child’s head at least once a week with the aid of a bright light or outdoors in the daylight for the best possible visibility.

If any member of your family should be found to have head lice during your head louse inspection, they should be treated with a solution to control louse symptoms and infection. Head lice treatments are specially formulated solutions that can be purchased at your local pharmacy. They generally come in the form of a shampoo, crème rinse, or gel. Most control louse treatments require multiple applications and the manufacturer’s directions should be followed carefully to ensure that head lice are eliminated and control is obtained.

Nix lice treatment solutions, which are the only ones to contain the chemical Permethrin, have been found to work the most effectively to kill lice and their eggs. Healthcare professionals routinely recommend Nix, because it performs as promised.

After louse control solutions have been applied, the next phase of regaining control is to manually remove louse eggs and louse nits from the infected person’s hair. This is done by combing their hair with a fine toothed comb in an effort to catch louse eggs and louse nits between the teeth of the comb and drag them out. Additionally, this part of the louse control process requires that you manually inspect the hair for louse eggs and nits that the comb did not catch. You must manually pick those that were not picked up by the comb out.

The final step in controlling a louse infestation is cleaning any surface that may have come in contact with the infected persons head. Louse can live off of the human body for up to two days, and these items should be cleaned to remove any lice or eggs that could cause re-infestation. Control louse procedures also includes disinfecting items that can be placed in the washing machine include washing these items in hot water for at least 20 minutes, and then also drying for at least 20 minutes on medium to high heat.
