Checklist for a lice-free household:
- Thoroughly vacuum everywhere. This includes rugs and carpets, mattresses, upholstered furniture and car seats. Dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag after use.
- Personal items should be cleaned by machine-washing in hot water (above 130ºF). This includes hats, hair ribbons, scarves, coats, towels and bed linens. After cleaning, they should be dried by using the hot cycle of the dryer for at least 20 minutes.
- Combs, brushes and hair clips should be cleaned by soaking them in hot water (above 130ºF) for 10 minutes.
- Bedspreads, blankets, pillows, stuffed animals or clothing that cannot be washed should be dry-cleaned or sealed in a plastic bag for a period of 4 weeks. Large items, like couches and beds, can be treated with Nix Lice Control Spray.
How Can We Avoid Head Lice In The Future?
Lice usually don’t travel far from their human host. The best way to avoid lice is to make a habit of avoiding the things that come in contact with other people’s heads and shoulders, and items used or worn during an outbreak.
- Don’t borrow or share personal items like hair clips, barrettes, brushes and combs.
- Don’t borrow or share hats, coats, sweaters, scarves, headphones and helmets.
- Hang coats and hats so that they are not touching other coats and hats.
