Step 3: How to prevent lice?

To reduce the chances of re-infestation of lice and to protect the other members of your family, you’ll need to clean every item that has come in contact with your child’s head and shoulders. Nix also offers a Lice Control Spray to treat bedding and furniture. Lice Control Spray helps prevent lice from spreading. Following are some lice prevention tips.

  • Thoroughly vacuum everywhere. This includes rugs and carpets, mattresses, upholstered furniture and car seats. Dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag after use.
  • Personal items should be cleaned by machine-washing in hot water (above 130ºF). This includes hats, hair ribbons, scarves, coats, towels and bed linens. After cleaning, they should be dried by using the hot cycle of the dryer for at least 20 minutes.
  • Combs, brushes and hair clips should be cleaned by soaking them in hot water (above 130ºF) for 10 minutes.
  • Bedspreads, blankets, pillows, stuffed animals or clothing that cannot be washed should be dry-cleaned or sealed in a plastic bag for a period of 4 weeks. Large items, like couches and beds, can be treated with Nix Lice Control Spray.

Lice usually don’t travel far from their human host and they can't jump or fly so, certain precautions are more important than others. Apart from using Lice Control Spray, the best lice prevention tip is to make a habit of avoiding the things that come in contact with other people’s heads and shoulders, and items used or worn during an outbreak.

  • Don't borrow or share personal items like hair clips, barrettes, brushes and combs.
  • Don't borrow or share hats, coats, sweaters, scarves, headphones and helmets.
  • Hang coats and hats so that they are not touching other coats and hats.
